The History of Arabian Horses

The Arabian horse originates from the Arabian Peninsula, where it can be traced back over 2000 years.

Strength, beauty and endurance are typical traits of this breed of horse. Studies have show that Arabian horses are amongst the oldest breeds discovered in the world.

The Bedouin people are thought to be the first to train the Arabian horse. The Bedouins took pride in the purity of the Arabian breed and could trace the history of every horse they owned. This is why it was crucial during these times to depend on a strong, reliable horse. It was vitally important that it was able to survive within a desert setting. The Bedouin tribes were constantly at war with other tribes in the region, and it was necessary to have a horse which could lead them into battle.

The Bedouins bred some of the most striking horses. These horses would often be traded and much importance was placed upon their lineage and ancestry. Arabian horses come in a variety of different variations or strains. These Arabs have shared ancestory as well as a likeness in their appearance. Dahman, Hadban, Kuhaylan are some examples.

The Arabian horse of one of the most well known breeds in the world. The head is triangular in shape, with large eyes in comparison to small muzzle. Arabian horses which have a concave shaped nose are highly prized. The neck of an Arabian horse should be arched, and their legs should be muscular and lean. Arabian horses have a silk-like coat which shines in the sun. Despite this, Arabian horses are often not seen at the highest levels of  show jumping competitions, because it does not have a good bascule compared to other breeds.

Typically, their coat is brown or grey although it is not unusual for some Arabian horses to have black coats. Arabs with black coats were at one point a rarity as it was thought their dark coats would absorb the heat, making it dangerous for both rider and horse. Arabian genes are so pure, they are commonly used in enhancing other breeds characteristics. Arabs are known for their relaxed temperament, making breeding them very attractive.

Arabian horses have been used in professional horse competitions for a long time, and Arabian horse games are being held every year in which the horses and their owners can compete with each other.
