How to Train a Small Dog

If you pick a small dog breed as your pet, I bet it is probably because you just want a little companion to hang out with inside your home. Since your little pet will be in the house a lot, his training is an important thing to consider.

Many little dog breeds combine intelligence with being headstrong, and may challenge you. Make sure you make the effort to properly obedience train your little guy, so that he knows you are in charge.

Train your little pal when he is just a puppy, to avoid the chance of having to overcome already habituated bad behaviors. If you have recently gotten a new puppy, enrolling him in group puppy training classes is a very good idea.

The group puppy class not only helps you learn how to obedience train your new pup, but also continues his socialization. The socializing of your new puppy helps reduce the chances of your dog later developing aggressive tendencies. By being in social groupings with other people and their puppies, he learns more about appropriate social behavior. In nature, this feedback is how the puppies learn what there place is within their packs.

If your small dog remains isolated from other dogs or people, he has a greater likelihood of becoming aggression towards other dogs or visitors. Be sure to pay attention to  your dog's obedience training and avoid problems behaviors from happening. Do  a good job of  training your little pal, and you will also be able to correct other behavior problems common to excitable smaller breeds, such as excessive barking and nipping.

You must use only positive training methods with the smaller breeds-just like you should with larger breeds of dogs. Don't use harsh methods, such as hitting and yelling at your pet. These harsher techniques will end up hurting your training efforts and are not good for helping your dog trust you.

By using a good dog training program, you will learn about how dogs communicate with each other. By learning to understand a dog's point of view, you can avoid making the same common training mistakes everyone else makes (such as treating your dog as if he were human), and have good results much more easily and quickly.

Using dog training methods that a dog can easily relate to, is essential to getting quick and long lasting results. By using the correct training methods, you can become your dog's Alpha leader-and earn his trust, confidence and respect. After your dog has recognized you as the Alpha leader, he becomes very  eager to follow your lead.

It is not uncommon for smaller dogs to show aggression or excessive barking problems. The good news is that these  nuisance behaviors can be easily enough corrected and controlled through obedience training. If you let them, an aggressive little dog can try to control the whole household.

Always be consistent and give your small dog lots of praise and rewards when you are training him. The positive reinforcement encourages your little pal to always try to do what you want. Repeat the exercises frequently-several time a day-to get the best results. Each session should be limited to about 10-15 minutes. As long as you maintain the training, you should soon see your little pet performing the correct behaviors you are teaching him. Naturally, the better behaved a dog he is, the happier your household will be.

The key to having a great pet is obedience training, no matter what size dog he may be . Don't make the same mistakes everyone makes when trying to train your dog at home, and end up with a partially trained companion.
