In this article we're going to discuss how to tell if you've got a sick bird on your hands.
Unlike people, birds can't tell you when something hurts or they just feel like garbage. So how do you tell when your bird is under the weather?
Most sick birds get that way because of poor nutrition and stress. Poor nutrition is more from what a bird eats than from how much, as birds don't need a lot of food. Stress can come from a number of things such as poor environment and rapid changes in temperature. A happy bird is usually a healthy bird.
Diet: A quality diet of fresh fruits, pastas, vegetables as well as nuts, vitamins, red palm oil and seeds and pellets can be costly. Your parrot will also need plenty of clean fresh water daily and do remember no dairy products what so ever, as birds are lactose intolerant
Parrot Cages: A cage alone for a parrot can cost as much or more than the bird itself. Your parrot's cage needs to be kept clean, free from any potential hazards such as sharp points or objects and should be large enough for a few bird toys as well as room enough for your parrot to comfortably spread his wings. This means a large Macaw, Amazon or Cockatoo needs a giant sized cage.
If you notice any of the above and suspect your bird is sick, immediately make an appointment with a vet. Take him there in his cage or some suitable container. Don't ever take your bird to the vet with him perched on your shoulder. Your pet will not be protected. Whatever container you use make sure it is covered. If you take it in its cage don't clean the cage. This can present evidence to the vet that can help diagnose the bird's problem.
Personality-A bird that is shy, aggressive, or noticeably quiet is not the best pick in terms of being able to speak. It's best to spend some time observing the bird at different times during the day to get the best idea of how much vocalizing the bird does naturally. This will also help you decide if the voice is a pleasant sound.
Longevity: Some varieties of parrots can live for up to 50 years or more, which is a lifelong commitment that also needs careful consideration as these birds become much attached to their owners. Are you prepared to take on that responsibility?
You will certainly need to do plenty of research if you decide to become a parrot owner, as these creatures are not only very smart, extremely vocal and require specific routine and medical care, but they are also very social creatures that need plenty of attention, stimulation and love. One final point to keep in mind is that despite popular belief, parrots are not domestic pets. They retain all of the natural instincts as their cousins do that live in the wild. Are you sure that you're up for all that?

At the first sign of sickness take your bird to the vet. It’s true that parrots take a lot of work to care for. That’s why I have a canary haha.
